Advice from Carol Stevens on researching at the Probate Office:
The probate office of Lenawee County has recently changed the hours for
genealogy research. There are no longer any research hours on Monday. They
are now restricting the hours to: Tues thru Friday, 9:30 to 11:30 AM and
1:30 to 3:30 PM.
(Those are the same hours as the vital records office is open, same building.)
The probate office is seriously UNDER staffed and OVER worked. The judge has mandated that genealogy research must be done after their current work load has been handled.
It is suggested that if you know you need a file, to please contact them in advance of your arrival at the courthouse and let them know which file(s) you will be interested in looking at.
I handle it by going in, looking at the index, writing up my order/request slip, and handing it over to them. I then have them call me when they have had the time to pull my files.
If you are coming in from out of town, please consider calling ahead and letting them know you are coming and what files you are interested in.
Thank you, Carol for an inside look at the Probate Office.

Don't over look property your family may have owned. This office will not, I don't think, look up
people for you but you can go in and do it for yourself or hire someone to do it for you. They used to and
likely still do charge $1 per page for a xeroxed copy of a deed.
Usually you will only get the names of the grantee and grantor, where they are living (community) and a description of the land and price paid. But once in a while a deed holds more important information for the family researcher. Also when an estate is being settled after the death of the owner, you can often find the heirs selling their portion of the estate to another heir or a person they are all selling their shares to.
